The King Island Racing Club on Saturday stages the island’s premier sporting event with the running of the Jim McKenzie Agencies Thoroughbred Cup and the Carlton And United Breweries Pacing Cup.
This season’s leading trainer Robert Keys is well represented in the thoroughbred cup with three runners including in-form mare Needs More Love.
The Needs Further mare completed a winning hat-trick last week when scoring an easy 3.25 length win.
All three wins have been over 1400 metres with David Pires, who has ridden the mare to two of those victories, taking the ride today.
Push Pause is another with the Keys polish applied and won a Class B event over the 1600 metres two starts ago, he lacks early speed but if the others go hard early he will be the one running on late.
He was ridden in his most recent victory by Tom Ryan who had a day out on the island two meetings ago riding four winners.
Frites is the last of the Keys trained trio in the race and is yet to be placed in three starts this season but is yet to miss a top two finish at the 1800-metre distance on the King Island track.
Then Pacing Cup has attacked a strong field including Karalta Kruise for local trainer John Rhodes and fly-in driver Wade Rattray.
The Mcardle gelding has won his last three on the island and takes on an open field including Frankie Falzoni who broke the track record when winning last week.
