The former Tasmanian-bred and owned Handsome Prince was crowned the 2020 Tasmanian Greyhound of the Year at the Tasmanian Greyhound of the Year awards dinner held at the Ladbrokes Racing Centre in Launceston on Saturday night.

Held in conjunction with the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club ahead of the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Final staged this Monday night, a great crowd was in attendance to see the awards announced for the previous season.

Handsome Prince, a brindle son of Sh Avatar and See Blue’s Girl was bred, owned and originally trained by Pat Ryan at Dilston until September 2020 and is now owned by Shakeel Latimer and trained by Peter Lagogiane in NSW.

Handsome Prince’s Tasmanian record was 14 starts for six wins, three seconds and three thirds and in NSW and Victoria he had six starts for three wins, one second and two fourths.

In Tasmania his performances included:

• Third in both his Heat and Semi final of the 2020 Hobart Maiden Thousand
• Won a qualifying heat, was 2nd in the Semi and finished 3rd in the Final of the Launceston Breeders Classic
• Won his heat and 5th in the Final of the inaugural Shane Yates Memorial Cup
• 2nd in an Illingworth Classic Heat but was scratched from the final due to injury

In New South Wales and Victoria:

• 2nd in the Regional Heat and 4th in the Regional Final of the 2020 Million Dollar Chase at Richmond
• Won Million Dollar Chase City Qualifier at Wentworth Park
• Won a Semi Final of the Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park
• Won the Final of the Million Dollar Chase, the world’s richest race, starting from box 7
• 4th in Heat of 2020 Melbourne Cup

Winning the Million Dollar Chase sees Handsome Prince with an impressive $1,026, 898 in lifetime earnings.

Tasmanian Leading Owner

Debbie Cannan has taken out the Tasmanian Owner of the Year award with 73 winners during 2020. This
tally was achieved by 11 individual greyhounds.

Tasmanian Leading Trainer

Anthony Bullock of Exeter won the Leading Trainer award with 212 winners for the year to retain the title. He has the impressive record of winning the title for the past 7 years and has now won the title 12 time in the past 13 years,
only being defeated in 2013 by Michael Stringer.

Anthony had 59 individual greyhounds win the 212 races with his most prolific winners being:

Tasmanian Leading Breeding Female

She’s All Class won the Leading Breeding Female award with eight of her progeny winning 45 races during 2020.

The majority of her winners came from the highly successful Aston Dee Bee litter which achieved 44 wins. This litter produced four starters in the Custom Resources & Recruitment Breeders Classic Final at Devonport. The other winner was sired by El Grand Senor.

She’s All Class was by Dyna Lachlan from It’s A She and was owned by David Crosswell at Bishopsbourne. She was leased by David Booth from Riverside for breeding purposes. In 2019 she was sent to breed in Victoria and after producing a litter of 5 pups by Zambora Brockie was bitten by a snake and unfortunately passed away.

Gypsies Luck with a record of 18 wins, 14 seconds and 5 thirds from 48 starts, accumulated 123 points to earn her the title of Tasmania’s Most Consistent Greyhound for 2020.

Gypsies Luck is by renown sire Fernando Bale out of Alotta Luck. Gypsies Luck is owned by Cindy Alderson at Cranbourne in Victoria and is trained by Anthony Bullock at Exeter.

She won races on all three Tasmanian tracks over the short sprint and sprint distances. She won 7 races at Hobart, 6 races at Launceston and 5 races at Devonport.

Included in her wins was a heat of the Group 3 Ladbrokes Devonport Chase in November.
