Talented three-year-old Warrior Prince ($4) broke through for his first win of the season when he outgunned the odds-on favourite Julius ($1.85) in a class three handicap over 1200m in Launceston on Wednesday night.
The Adam Trinder-trained gelding had run into War Correspondent a couple of times this season and had to settle for seconds but with David Pires aboard the gelded son of Artie Schiller proved too strong for his rivals and went to the line powerfully to score comfortably from Julius with the winner’s stablemate Border Protection ($7 into $3.60) a distant third.
“This season has been difficult for this horse, but he probably got lost in the system a bit, but it is good to see him get a deserving win,” Trinder said.
Pires said Warrior Prince had been consistent without winning.
“I am pleased for the horse that he has got another win on the board, because he has been consistent and raced against good quality opposition most of this season,” Pires said.
Julius pulled up with what appeared to be a respiratory issue and managing owner Denise Martin said the gelding may have swallowed turf fragments which may have attributed to the four-year-old coughing upon return to the unsaddling enclosure.
