Longford trainer Leon Laskey has landed a few decent plunges with his mare Reann’s Diamond, but none better than the one he conjured up in Launceston on Wednesday night.
Reann’s Diamond was backed in from an opening price of $31 to $10 and after being given a cushy run behind the leader by Victorian rider Jason Lyon, the mare ground down race leader Son of Faith ($13) to win in the last stride.
It was the third time the mare had delivered after being well backed and each time it has been when the track had suffered a downgrade.
The track was downgraded on Wednesday to a soft 6, which the riders suggested was a true assessment when Reann’s Diamond went around.
“That was a bit too close for comfort (winning margin), but she always tries hard and goes extra well on rain-affected tracks,” said Laskey.
“Although we were expecting a much heavier track than we ended up with, so all-in-all it was a great result.
“She ran a really good race last week and she is a mare that I have been able to back-up quickly.
“She was drawn to get the gun run and Jason (Lyon) rode her beautifully.”
Reann’s Diamond, a nine-year-old by Reaan from Lung Tah, is closing in on $200,000 in prizemoney derived from 11 wins and 14 minor placings from 103 starts.
