The Wakeful Club of Tasmania presented last season’s leading apprentice Siggy Carr with a trophy and award for being named its Leading Lady in Racing for the 2012-13 racing season.
Carr finished the season with 46 winners to easily win the apprentice’s title and she also finished third on the senior jockey’s premiership.
It is a reintroduced Leading Lady in Racing award which the club intends to keep as an annual award.
The Tasmanian Wakeful Club, which was established in September 1997, takes its name in celebration of the fascinating champion mare, Wakeful. Over her career, Wakeful had 44 starts for 25 wins, 12 seconds and 4 thirds with just 3 unplaced runs.
She retired in 1903 after running 2nd in the Melbourne Cup carrying 63.5kgs (10 stone). She was also mother of the 1918 Melbourne Cup winner Night Watch and together with Sunline she was one of the first two mares to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame 2002.
Wakeful Club president Jill Hart presented Carr with her Leading Lady in Racing 2013 trophy plus a voucher from Horseland.
It is the intention of the Tasmanian Wakeful Club to grow its presence in the state’s racing industry.
