AFTER snaring a double at the Hobart meeting at Tattersall’s Park last weekend, former Victorian jockey Patrick Keane will be keen to make the most of his three rides on the eight-event card in Devonport on Sunday to work his way closer to the top of the premiership table.
Keane only has three rides but two are likely to start favourite on the strength of their last start efforts.
He will partner Hellova Street for the Brunton stable in race two, the Pedro restaurant 3YO and Up Maiden Plate over 1150 metres and he is aboard that horse’s stablemate Am I There Yet in a Maiden/Class 1 over 1650m (race 5).
Keane also has been booked to ride the Royston Carr-trained Ebbing but on exposed form he will be hard pressed to make an impact in race seven, the benchmark 78 over 1350m.
Keane partnered the John Blacker-trained Symbol of Freedom to victory in Hobart last Sunday and he followed up with a bold front-running ride aboard devil’s Tears that showed great courage to fight back after being clearly headed in the home straight to win a class one.
On Sunday he teams up with Hellova Street (Helike-Butter Street) that is coming off a close-up second at Devonport last Sunday week behind first starter Prickly Diamonds in a maiden over 900 metres.
The three-year-old gelding was placed at his only other start, also at Devonport so the experience on the track should help his cause.
Am I There Yet tried hard to win last start at the venue. He came from well back at the 600m peg to swoop home only to be denied victory by another swooper (Poponova) that flashed home along the rails.
David Pires leads the jockeys premiership with nine wins but he has only a modest book of rides on Sunday so if Keane can snare a double he could be sharing the premiership lead at the end of the day.
