LIGHTLY raced two-year-old Calavera got punters off to a flying start at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart today with an impressive win a three-horse race.

Flying Flo Jo set a solid pace in front and after pulling early Erin’s Element moved from trailing the leader to race at her girth to the 500-metres where she started to apply pressure while Calavera settled last in the small field of three and the Barry Campbell-trained gelding was still last turning for home.

Flying Flo Jo dropped off Erin’s Element but when jockey Brendon McCoull called on Calavera for the big effort the gelded son of Written Tycoon hauled in the leader Flying Flo Jo 100 metres out and despite trying to lay in he forged clear to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Flying Flo Jo with Erin’s Element over three lengths away third.

It was Calavera’s second win from only three starts, having scored impressively in Launceston just over three weeks ago.

Campbell is considered the king of the two-year-olds in Tasmania having produced more individual winners in that age group than any other trainer in the state so far this season with his stable star Admiral early favourite to win 2YO of the year.

Listen to what trainer Barry Campbell had to say about Calavera’s second win.
