The summer racing carnival is now the target for promising Longford stayer Genuine Lad. Trainer Bill Ryan is predicting one more winter start for the three-year-old before a spell and then being aimed at better class races over the summer racing carnival. Genuine Lad took his record to three wins from seven starts with an effortless three-length win in the Boags Draught Handicap (1880m) at Spreyton.
Ryan said he had a good opinion of Genuine Lad and thought him capable of making the step up. “I’m looking at a 2100m race at Mowbray for him and then a break,” he said.
Ridden by premier jockey Brendon McCoull, Genuine Lad sat behind early leader Integer before dashing away in the home straight to beat Chimed Inn and Gee Gees Opera. It was the second leg of a winning double for McCoull who had earlier won the opening race on Sid The Sloth.
