THE Group 3 Betfair Launceston Cup is the prime target for talented four-year-old mare At The Weekend that delivered the best win of her career in a benchmark 72 event over 1400 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday.
At The Weekend was one of last season’s better performed three-year-olds winning once and placing three times from five starts.
Her first-up win in Hobart on September 21 was encouraging as she won despite racing ungenerously in the home straight and during other parts of the race.
The mare’s trainer Adam Trinder said the mare has always shown staying promise and she proved it by placing in the Strutt Stakes and Tasmanian Oaks over 2100m behind last season’s three-year-old of the year Iggimacool.
Trinder applied blinkers for the first time on Sunday and the mare responded by springing from the gates and landing just behind the leader.
Rider Daniel Ganderton kept the mare under a tight rein to the home turn where he eased past the leader Serpents View and set sail for the judge.
At The Weekend hit the line two lengths clear of O’Reillys Geegee with Serpents View hanging on for third and just ahead of Chiming.
