BEAUTIFUL BUNS repaid connections for recent minor placings when she held on to win the Equine Health Australia Class 1 Handicap over 1350m metres on her home track at Spreyton on Sunday.
The Adam Trinder-trained mare was beaten into second place in a photo-finish at her previous outing and prior to that she was placed third and fourth against similar opposition that she met on Sunday.
Trinder said the five-year-old mare deserved to win another race and he is hopeful there are more to come.
“It’s great to get another win from this mare because she is extremely well bred and has been a bit unlucky at some of her recent runs,” Trinder said.
“These class one races are really competitive at the moment and they are proving to be very hard to win.”
“She won a class one back in February on Launceston Cup day that we subsequently lost to a positive swab and we’ve found that race, for one reason or another, very hard to win back,” he said.
Beautiful Buns is not the most “sound” horse in Trinder’s stable.
“I have been really cautious with her all the way along because she has had a bit of tendonitis and a couple of other issues.”
“I reckon she is going to be a high speed miler (1600m) and that’s where I expect her to find her level.”
“She has got a good base fitness in her now so we might even back her up in Hobart next week,” Trinder said.
Beautiful Buns (Minnaloushe-Sweet Spot) has started 18 times for two wins and five minor placings for just over $22,000 in stakes.
Last Sunday the mare was allowed to roll along just off the pace set by Zarimby that sat three-wide early before strolling past Beautiful Buns to assume control 800 metres from home.
Rider Ryan Plumb tried to pinch the race by urging Beautiful Buns to burst clear at the top of the home straight and the mare looked set to win comfortably but the she had to dig deep over the concluding stages to hold out the fast-finishing Wakefield that missed by a narrow margin.
