After a successful two-day Hobart Cup weekend, the feature races of the summer festival take a week’s break before heading to Launceston next Friday night.
There is, however, a seven-event card in Hobart this Sunday where a few promising 2yos hold plenty of interest.
Crack The Shutters from the Stuart Gandy stable was enormous on debut flashing home to finish second to Zany Girl in the Listed Elwick Stakes (1100m) on 19 January.
Crack The Shutters rattled home to be beaten a neck and probably would have won in a few more strides.
Leanne Gaffney’s Star Fortian was second on debut in a 2yo maiden behind Zany Girl but finished down the track in the Magic Millions in Launceston two weeks ago.
Wolf Junior, trained by Barry Campbell, trialled well before being unplaced on debut while one of three debutantes on Sunday, Colonel Bogey, has a big wrap and was untroubled to win a trial at Devonport 12 days ago.
“Anyone who saw that trial will know he won that trial jumping overshadows the entire straight, so there’s definitely more potential there. We are very excited to get him to the races, he was one of our most expensive purchases to date,” trainer Jessie Bazan said.
“He’s just got the best attitude, he’s very natural for a 2yo, and he’s built more like a 3yo. He has a beautiful solid body, strong legs, and a beautiful work ethic.
“We targeted this 2yo maiden this week hoping to get the Tasbred bonus with the hopes that he comes through it really well. If he acquits himself nicely and pulls up well, we would love to tackle the Gold Sovereign.”
The Listed Gold Sovereign over 1200m is run on Launceston Cup Day and carries $150,000 in prize money.
“We will find out where we stand on Sunday; anything could happen, but we want him to have a good experience. We know the ability is there; whether we see it at this start or further in the future, we know he has a great career ahead.
“Crack The Shutters was a super run last time, but we’ve got every confidence in our fellow.
“He didn’t get the opportunity to have a trial on the grass, but he’s had a couple of grass gallops where he’s gone really well, and he’s got the ability to get it done.”
The Kevin Sharkie 2yo kicks off the day at 13:10, my best is in race 5, Sh’Bourne Midnight. Pete Staples will be on track for Tasracing Live.
