TEENAGE apprentice Kyle Maskiell shone like the brightest star in the sky at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart yesterday riding four winners to signal his arrival as a genuine star in the making.
Maskiell, 15, outside his four kilogram claim in Launceston last Wednesday night riding a double but that paled into insignificance yesterday when he rode four winners on the eight-race program.
His wins came in successive races beginning with Hailed that is owned by the young rider’s his step-mother Yasmin Maskiell and prepared by Charlie Goggin and Luella Meaburn.
It was a special win as the rider’s father Stephen also played a role in the win.
The apprentice then guided the Walter McShane-trained Arkadashim to victory in the maiden/class one over 1600m and after the race the trainer acknowledged that to win a great ride was needed and Maskiell was able to deliver.
He then partnered the Max Cohen-trained Player One to an emphatic win in a BM72 handicap over 2100 metres.
Maskiell had Player One settled third and always close enough to the leader Another Lad Al and when he called on the five-year-old gelding to extend turning for home he quickly gathered in the leaders and went on to win comfortably from Settler’s Joy that ran on strongly ahead of Deux Foix and Settler’s Stone.
The Barry Campbell-trained Manchero delivered Maskiell’s fourth win of the day and it was a courageous performance from the three-year-old that fought back after being clearly headed 100 metres out to win the Benchmark 72 handicap over 1100 metres.
