OUTSTANDING three-year-old filly Geegees Goldengirl looks set to add another win to her already impressive list of victories when she tackles the Mawingo at Grenville Fillies and Mares Quality Handicap over 1200 metres (Race 9) at UBET Park Hobart today.
Geegees Goldengirl won the Tasmanian Oaks over 2100 metres after which she had a short spell but returned to racing two weeks ago to win a feature race over 1100 metres.
Her versatility sets her apart from any other three-year-old this season and given she drops dramatically in weight for today’s assignment, compared to what she carried last start, she should again prove too strong for her rivals.
Geegees Goldengirl lugged 59kg to victory last start but drops to 55.5kg today while most of those in the race that she defeated last start, including the second favourite Frolicked, have to concede her at least four kilograms for being beaten varying margins.
Her quote with most corporate bookmakers is $1.80 which appears a lucrative price given how well placed she is in today’s race.
The filly is one of four from the Stuart Gandy stable likely to start favourite in their respective races.
Geegees Doublejay, arguably the state’s best three-year-old sprinter, will be forced to carry 62 kilograms on a heavy track in the Autumn 3YO handicap over 1200m which makes him vulnerable for the first time this season.
Geegees Doublejay is clearly a better galloper on top of the ground and while he has won in rain affected going his impost could be his downfall with all other runners on the minimum of 54kg.
The Adam Trinder-trained Silver Bolt has finished second to Geegees Doublejay at their last two outings and gets his chance to turn the tables, provided he can handle the heavy track.
Gandy also will saddle up Gee Gees Top Notch in the 2YO Autumn Classic over 1200m and while he has only been caring for the filly for less than a week, owing to her trainer John Luttrell being outed over a positive swab charge, she should be too strong for her rivals.
Like her stablemates, she is an unknown on heavy ground.
Geegees Soprano has had eight starts this time in for four wins, three seconds and a first-up third and despite carrying 59kg with the claim for apprentice Boris Thornton he could still be too good for his rivals.
The track is rated a Heavy 9 with the rail out two metres for the entire circuit with punters likely to get a better understanding of how the track might play after the first two races.
