UNDERRATED stayer Sun Disk delivered an expected result when he outgunned a small field in a Benchmark 62 Handicap event over 2400m at UBET Park Hobart yesterday.
The Adam Trinder-trained gelding had to carry 60 kilograms but was meeting modest opposition and punters rallied for the six-year-old who has been trying to win a race for 18 months.
Sun Disk is a mudlark which is why Trinder had him prepared for a winter campaign.
The six-year-old is nominated for the $40,000 St Leger at UBET Racing Centre in Launceston on Sunday but Trinder said the track might be heavy enough for his horse’s liking.
Yesterday Sun Disk settled just worse than midfield while No Go Zone made play in front in the six-horse field.
Stable apprentice Boris Thornton ensure he had Sun Disc on the outside of the field as they carved down to the fence from the 700-metre mark so as to have the gelding poised to take to the outside fence in the home straight.
When thewy hot the home straight Thornton called on Sun Disk for the big effort and he went on to score comfortably from Rock Speed with rank outsider Talent Code a closing third.
