FORMER Victorian filly Sunday Cider could prove to be a good money spinner for her connections following an impressive win at her first start in Tasmania over 1000 metres at UBET Park Hobart this afternoon.
With apprentice Ismail Toker in the saddle, Sunday Cider (Magnus-Unrocel Gem) began well in the small field of six and was up challenging for the lead 600m from home.
When Toker asked the filly to extend she bounded clear and had enough in reserve to stave off a determined challenge from first-starter Nice Knickers to defeat that mare by almost a length with Etown 1-3/4 lengths away third ahead of th4e favourite Because ($1.80).
Despite having the most race experience of the six runners the Tammy Mollross-trained three-year-old started the rank outsider at $21.
Sunday Cider had eight starts in Victoria for one minor placing at Hamilton that prompted her original owners to place her on the market.
“One of my long-time stable clients David Kinniburgh saw this filly advertised for sale on the Internet and while I’m not at liberty to say how much he paid I can say it wasn’t much,” Mollross said.
“She came to me in very good order and last week she had a jump-out here at Ubet Park and she did well enough for me to tell the owner that she would be a winning chance first-up.”
“She is very well bred and because she can handle the heavy tracks she might win another one or two before the season’s end,” she said.
Because settled just off the speed and looked a winning chance turning for home but once again she failed to deliver at the business end of proceedings.
Another first-starter Off The Grid finished last after sharing the lead to the home turn but she is one worth following as she is by Tough Speed from former star two-year-old Rustica.
