RAQUEL CLARK has made quite an impact in her first few weeks as an apprentice jockey with her win aboard Our Cheerio at UBET Park Hobart last Sunday her second winner from only three rides.
Clark is apprenticed to Hall of Fame trainer Barry Campbell at Spreyton and according to her master the 21-year-old is one of Tasmania’s brightest prospects.
“Raquel is a very dedicated young rider who tackles her craft professionally and with as much gusto as any male apprentice we’ve had ride in the state in recent years,” Campbell said.
“She complains about nothing and has a work ethic that’s second to none that I’ve had come to my stable,” he said.
Both of Clark’s wins have been for her master and her ride to secure victory for Our Cheerio was a gem.
She had the pint-sized gelding settled near the lead and wanting to get to the outside fence to secure the fast lane Clark eased her mount slightly when she saw the horse on her outside was laying in under pressure.
That paved the way for her to get to the outside at the top of the home straight and it proved to be the winning move.
Campbell said Our Cheerio was only small but had good manners and he expects him to be better next season.
“He’s only small and probably needs time to grow and fill out so we’ll most likely give him a spell,” Campbell said.
