ONE of the best-backed winners on the eight-event card at Spreyton yesterday (Friday) was the Leon and Dean Wells-trained filly Ready If You Are that was backed in to start the $2.30 favourite and never let her supporters down.
Ready If You Are settled just off the speed and had nice cover one-off the fence to the home turn and when jockey Brendon McCoull called on the well-bred grey to extend she bounded clear.
The three-year-old filly hit the line a half-head clear of first-starter Elegatano ($7.50) that was forced to cover a lot of ground in the run with his stablemate Appassionata 1-1/2 lengths away third.
Ready If You Are (Nicconi-Already) is owned by Chris and Sharon Wickham who had much success with brilliant mares Rebel Bride And Black ‘N’ Tough.
“I don’t know that this filly is in the same league as my former good mares but she is developing well and I am just happy that she’s won a race at this stage,” Chris Wickham said.
“I bought her off the Internet for $25,000 and when she came to me I was quite distraught because she was quite small and scrawny but we’ve managed to get her right and whatever she does this preparation I’m sure she will improve on next campaign,” he said.
