DAVID PIRES looks set to win his first jockey’s premiership after riding a double at UBET Park Hobart today to stretch his lead to six with only two meetings of the 2014-15 season remaining.
Pires won the opening race aboard the Scott Brunton-trained Extended Warranty and he made it book end wins when he closed the program with a win aboard Tiger Jack, also prepared at Seven Mile Beach by Brunton.
Pires went into the meeting with a four win lead over Brendon McCoull who had been gradually decreasing the margin.
But when McCoull failed to secure a winner despite having three plum rides, it appears to have paved the way for Pires to win the title.
Pires has notched 72 winners and will go into next Sunday’s penultimate meeting for the season with a six win buffer.
