THE Tasmanian Racing Club’s request to have the distance of the AAMI Hobart Cup stretched from 2200 metres to 2400 metres has been put forward to the Australian Pattern Committee for sanctioning.
The Australian Pattern Committee (APC) is sanctioned by the Australian Racing Board (ARB) to make recommendations as to which Australian races are worthy of “Black Type” status.
Of great importance to race clubs, breeders and owners, the listings of Group and Listed races are approved and published by the ARB and are accepted by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee for publication in ‘The Blue Book’, thereby achieving international recognition for Australia’s best races.
The APC meets twice yearly to consider applications for races to be included and/or upgraded in the Listings and to review the current classification of existing Black Type races.
A proposal from the Tasmanian Racing Club was put to the Tasmanian code’s Thoroughbred Advisory Network (TAN) this week which met with that body’s approval and the change also has been supported by Tasracing.
If the proposal is sanctioned by the APC it will take effect from next season.
The Hobart Cup was originally run over 12 furlongs but when the metric measure came in it was adjusted to 2380 metres but that was stretched to 2400 metres a few years later.
However at the wish of the Pattern Committee the distance of the race was reduced to 2100 metres in 2005 and then stretched to 2200m a year later.
