TASMANIAN Hall of Fame trainer Gary White predicted an interstate trip for his inform sprinter Meconsul after he notched his third win in succession in late May in Launceston and at Pakenham in Victoria yesterday the gelding delivered the goods.
Meconsul delivered a top class performance to easily win a Winter Championship heat in a BM70 Handicap over 1350 metres with talented apprentice Damian Thornton aboard.
Thornton struck a relationship with the Barry Cooper-owned gelding in Tasmania by partnering him to his three wins before White sent him across Bass Strait.
Yesterday’s win was with some authority and White is confident there is at least one more win in the three-year-old before he returns home for a spell.
“We set our sights on this race a while back and I’m rapt that everything worked out as we had hoped,” White said.
“I sent the horse to stay with Tony and Doug Harrison at Havelock Park (Cranbourne) after his first run at Sale last month they had him looking at the top of his game for this race.”
“The plan is to stay in Victoria for at least one more run and at the moment it could be a race at Moonee Valley or the Winter Championship final in a fortnight,” he said.
Meconsul won four of five starts leading up to his venture to Victoria.
The latest win took Meconsul’s record to six wins with two minor placings from 15 starts taking his stake earnings to $85,000.
