CLASSY young stayer Bell Haven signalled a warning that she could be a serious contender in the up[coming National Distance Championship series following her effortless win in the TOTE Racing Centre Distance Championship over 720 metres in Launceston on Monday night.
Bell Haven began brilliantly from box four and had no trouble finding the lead and from there on it was a procession.
The Ted Medhurst-trained bitch extended her lead down the back stretch and went on to score by nine lengths from Paper Trail with Fortune Ate a half-head astern.
Medhurst confirmed the Nationals were the young bitch’s main targets.
“We’ll look at the state heats of the national distance championships next month and hope we’re lucky enough to get a crack at the National final,” Medhurst said.
The National Distance Championship will be run over 709 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart in late August.
“She has real good form over the middle distance in Hobart so the track won’t be a problem.”
Bell Haven is owned by Debbie Cannan in partnership with Rob Milner.
She has an excellent record of 13 wins and five minor placings from 25 starts.
Medhurst said her long-term future would be interstate.
“Once the National championships are over she’ll more than likely head to the mainland,” he said.
