VICTORIAN harness racing mare Mossdale Gabby could be a contender in some of Tasmania’s feature mares’ races in the coming weeks given the way she went about winning a C5-C7 event over 2200 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston last Sunday.
With top local driver Rohan Hadley in the cart, Mossdale Gabby settled at the rear of the field and was not released fully until entering the home straight the last time.
Once she was balanced the mare unleashed a sensation sprint and collared race leader and odds-on favourite Saturday Nights in the last few bounds.
It was her first start in the state and given she had only landed in the state by sea 12 hours prior and didn’t arrive on-course until an hour before her race she did a marvelous job.
Mossdale Gabby is prepared at Caroline Springs in Victoria by Adam Kelly who has targeted three feature mares’ races for the five-year-old, inluding the prestigious George Johnson in Hobart on New Year Day.
The New Zealand-bred mare has started nine times this season with this her first win, although she has notched two minor placings and been placed fourth three times.
She won five in succession in June-July that included an M0 at Tabcorp Park at Melton in which she clocked a personal best mile rate of 1m:56.1s over 1720 metres.
The mare will be in the care of Scottsdale trainer Max Hadley during her stay in Tasmania.
