STAR Tasmanian galloper Geegees Doublejay reaffirmed his status as one of the best sprinters in the state with a track record-breaking win in the Carlton United Brewery Quality Handicap over 1100 metres.

Geegees Doublejay covered the 1100 metres trip in 1m.03.6s to better the previous best set by Admiral of 1.03.79.

With apprentice Siggy Carr aboard, Geegees Doublejay led from a wide gate and when Carr called on him for the supreme effort in the home straight he sped clear and hit the line a three-length winner over quality mare Merrick’s Beauty with Tennessee Drive third.

It was an effortless win and one that pleased his trainer Stuart Gandy.

“This horse just loves his racing and the best part is that he doesn’t seem phased about having to carry big weights,” Gandy said.

“He’s run a track record tonight and that doesn’t surprise me, in fact nothing this horse does or can do would ever surprise me,” he said.

Gandy confirmed Geegees Doublejay would have his next start in the Winzenberg Trophy over 1100m in Hobart on December 18 and then head back to Launceston for the $50,000 UBET.com Stakes over 1200m on January 20.
