MACLEAY Thoroughbreds has enjoyed great success at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearlings Sales in recent years and stud master Jenny Watson is expecting plenty of interest in the four lots the stud will put through the ring at Inveresk in Launceston in February next year.

Two years ago Macleay Thoroughbreds was responsible for the top-priced yearling, a colt by Teofilo from the Palace Music mare Palatine Hill that sold for $85,000 and was dispatched to the stables of Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir.

He races as Palentino and the colt has won two of his three starts with his latest win over 1400m in a $150,000 Listed  race at Flemington during the Spring Carnival.

At Terang today (Monday, December 07) Olafsson scored a courageous win for trainers Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zara and the three-year-old gelding also is a graduate of the 2014 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling sale offered by Macleay Thoroughbreds.

Palentino and Olafsson are just two of the many reasons why thoroughbred buyers should make the trip to Tasmania to purchase a yearling.

While Palentino topped the sale, Olafsson sold for only $21,000 and he is well on the way to paying his way.

Both youngsters were SuperVobis qualified so they each had bonuses attached to their wins.

Watson says the stud’s 2016 draft is superb with all lots offering something different in type and character.

Lot 4 is a brown colt by Red Arrow from the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Marrizza’s Dream that Watson says is an outstanding specimen.

“I bought the mare in foal and what she dropped is a magnificent looking colt with a wonderful temperament and I’m sure he will attract plenty of attention when he goes through the ring,” Watson said.

Lot 21 is a half-sister to Palentino and this filly by Tough Speed is expected to go close to topping the sale.

“The Palatine Hill filly is not as flashy as Palentino that is chestnut with distinct white markings and has a robust build while his half-sister has no flashy markings and is smaller but she has a wonderful conformation, a lovely head and a good eye,” she said.

Lot 75 is a filly by Armidale stallion Needs Further (x Encosta de Lago) from Arnika a winner of three and whose dam Miss Edelweiss has produced six foals that have all won including Akamai that won eight and Missile Device that also won eight including wins in Sydney and multiple wins in Singapore racing as King and Infinite.

Lot 93 is a Bushranger filly from Watson’s well-bred mare Convince (Canny Lad-Thrill x Bellotto).

“The Bushranger filly is likely to be an early two-year-old because she is a racy type and the Bushrangers generally go early,” Watson said.

The 2016 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale will be held in Launceston on February 18 and the catalogue is available online.
