PROMISING two-year-old pacer Ponderosas Gamble was expected to win a spelling paddock this week but after his impressive win in the Geoff Bennett 2YO Pace over 1609 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart tonight (Monday) connections may change their plans.
Ponderosas Gamble was having only his fifth start but he showed the characteristics of a more seasoned performer to win the race.
The Paul Williams-trained gelding drew the inside of the second row so his trainer-driver Paul Williams snagged him back at the start and then sent him charging around the field 1200 metres from home to race at the leader’s wheel.
When Williams called on Ponderosas Gamble for the big effort in the home straight he forged clear and while he switched off once he hit the front it was still a very professional effort.
The flashy chestnut was purchased at last year’s Tasmanian Yearling Sale for $15,000 by veteran owner Derek Burdon who turns 90 next week.
Burdon took a chance on the chestnut as it wasn’t the yearling he was hoping to take home.
The lot he was hoping to buy was passed in when bidding stopped at $21,00.
