TASMANIA’S multiple premiership-winning jockey Brendon McCoull is rapidly making up for lost time in the race for another title.
McCoull spent almost three months sidelined with a broken collarbone and cracked shoulder blade from mid January until the second week in April.
During that time Stephen Maskiell, Anthony Darmanin and Kelvin Sanderson made the most of his absence but after only four meetings back in the saddle McCoull’s 10 winners has moved him within five wins of regaining the lead from Maskiell who has accrued 52-1/2 wins.
With 13 meetings remaining this season McCoull looks set to win his 13th jockey’s premiership and he probably only has to mirror his April aggregate to achieve the goal.
However, Maskiell is a tough competitor and should he still be leading with a couple of meetings remaining then his fighting spirit could make it a very interesting end to the season.
There’s no doubt only the top four on the premiership table at present can win the crown.
Darmanin is lying equal second with McCoull on 48 wins and his association with the reigning premier training combination of David and Scott Brunton has helped his tally along.
He also has aligned himself with top Spreyton mentor Barry Campbell so if he can continue to snare rides from both of those stables he remains a premiership contender.
Sanderson is the quiet achiever who has kept his tally rolling along to sit fourth on 46 wins and with plenty of top rides to come.
The Bruntons will win the trainer’s premiership again as they have 57-1/2 wins to their credit with their nearest rival Leon Wells on 30 wins ahead of Gary White with 24-1/2 and Barry Campbell who has so far prepared 22 winners. Tasmanian Jockey and Trainer Premiership tables – click here .
