MELBOURNE Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne has snared the ride on interstate invader Beliveau in next Monday’s Betfair Exchange Hobart Cup (2400m).
Beliveau’s trainer Clinton McDonald was waiting until the death knock to accept for the race which is why he and Payne were hesitant to show their hands before acceptances.
Beliveau is a seasoned stayer prepared by Clinton McDonald at Caulfield and the gelding comes off an eye-catching second at Monee Valley and he has drawn favourably in barrier five.
Payne has become a national celebrity since she partnered Prince of Penzance to victory in the Melbourne Cup last November with the talented jockey spending a lot of time traveling around Australia making guest appearances at a myriad of functions and events.
But she says it’s time to refocus on her riding beginning in earnest in Hobart next Monday.
Meanwhile the Peter Moody-trained mare Metaphorical has been installed favourite with UBET at $4.00 ahead of the David Brideoake-trained Wales that scored an impressive win at his most recent start in Victoria.
