TRAINER John Blacker is confident his promising middle distance performer Powercharged will be a force in the feature races up to 1600 metres next season.
That’s what Blacker predicted after Powercharged produced the run of the night to win the BM82 handicap over 1600 metres under lights at the UBET Racing Centre in Launceston last night.
With in-form apprentice Raquel Clark aboard, Powercharged missed the start and was caught wide early, leaving the rider with no option but to drop back and settle at the rear of the field.
Miss It And A Bit ($9.50) was fill of running on the lead and looked set to win turning for home with Powercharged ($2.70 fav) still last in the field of 10.
But when Clark called on the gelded son of Magnus for the supreme effort 200 metres from home he dug deep and overhauled the leaders close to home and went on to score by over a length from Miss It And A Bit with Keukenhof ($7.60) a close-up third.
“This horse has shown me enough this season to suggest he has what it takes to be a very good weight-for-age performer and next season I reckon he’ll shine,” Blacker said.
“To win from where he was tonight was an amazing effort because I thought as far out as 800m from home he had no hope of winning from where he was in the run.
“Only real good horses can find a way to win in those situations.
“Next season we’ll start with the Newmarket and work our way up,” he said.
Powercharged ran Tasmania’s best horse Admiral to a half=length in the 1400m weight-for-age Thomas Lyons in Hobart and he was unsuited to heavy conditions when fourth to that horse in the George Adams Plate in Launceston prior to winning at this latest outing.
