TALENTED three-year-old pacer Modern Judge may have finished out of the placings in last Sunday night’s SEW Eurodrive Tasmanian Derby but he wasn’t missed in the run.
Modern Judge was sporting a new sulky purchased by his owners from the USA with its iridescent lime green colour visible from every vantage point on the track.
While the sulky’s colour is distinctive, to say the least, the gelding’s trainer-driver Brett Jaffray believes the design has played a role in the horse’s recent wins.
“The sulky design definitely helps the horse with balance on turns but it doesn’t give the horse any more ability,” Jaffray said.
“If the horse hasn’t got ability it won’t matter what sort of sulky you use.”
“But there was at least one occasion recently when the horse was caught in a precarious position and the sulky’s design allowed him to stay balanced better than he probably would have with a standard sulky,” he said.
Modern Judge’s owners, Ian and Brett Collins, Peter Jones and Gary Murfet from Sydney, outlaid just under $10,000 for the super sulky, which is similar to the one used on the state’s rising star Gedlee.
