TASMANIA has unearthed a potential superstar in four-year-old Gedlee that produced a remarkable win in Hobart on Monday night.
Gedlee was having his third start for the season in C2 or better standing start handicap over 2090 metres at Tattersall’s Park.
He was handicapped off 10 metres but he made a mess of the start and by the time teenage novice driver Alex Ashwood was able to get him back into a pace he was 50 metres behind the second last horse and almost 100 metres from the leader Cats And Dogs.
But Ashwood didn’t panic and allowed the four-year-old entire to gradually tack onto the main body of the field with a lap to go.
He sent Gedlee into the three-wide line to improve on the back of Earl Hickey but Ashwood took him four-wide to challenge and on the home turn the end result was never in doubt.
Gedlee collared the leader and went on to won by over 10 metres from cats And Dogs with Earl Hickey a half-head astern.
The mile rate was 2m.04.2 but Gedlee was privately clocked at running his last 1600m in 1m.57.25.
While it was only a C2 field it was the way the Time Stands Still four-year-old went about his business that suggests he is well and truly the real deal.
Gedlee is arguably the most promising pacer to grace Tasmanian tracks since Halyer and if he is well managed the horse is destined for great heights.
