Rattray needs four wins for record

23 / 08 / 2010 Article by: Editor

STAR Tasmanian harness racing reinsman Gareth Rattray will need to drive four winners at the last harness meeting of the season if he is to break the record of the most number of wins in a season.

The season concludes at Tattersall’s Park next Sunday for what should be a nine-race meeting and Rattray has the record, which is held by his father Barrie Rattray, firmly in his sights.

Gareth drove one winner, Safina Leis, at last Sunday night’s meeting in Launceston to move his total to 115 and ironically that filly is trained by his father.

Nominations for this Sunday night’s program are good and Gareth is keen to get as many drives as possible.

He could manage only one win from six drives last Sunday but his strike rate has been better on the Hobart circuit these past three months.

Irrespective of whether Gareth secures the record he will win his fifth driver’s premiership in succession.

His previous best tally was 113 that he secured during the 2007/08 season and last season he won with 94.

So far this season his 115 winners have amounted to stakes of almost $700,000.
