BRIGHTON based trainer Gary White will venture north to Launceston tonight with a team of six and he is quietly confident of emerging with at least one winner.
White believes his two maiden performers Saumur (race 1) and What A Life (race 2) have genuine winning chances while Gathering Gold rates a strong each-way chance in race three, the max Baker Class 2 Handicap over 1400 metres.
His former smart juvenile Southlander is having his fifth run this preparation in the Fred Riley Class 1 Handicap (race 6) and while he has yet to reproduce the form that gave him a win on debut White is confident the horse is now in peak physical condition and will run a big race tonight.
Twenty Grand has long been one of the White stable’s best performers and the gelding looms as his best winning chance on the nine-event program.
His three-year-old Luzambo produced an enormous effort last start when third in Hobart after being never better than three and four wide over 1600m.
Tonight Luzambo has the services of a great barrier (2) from which rider Lee Smith should be able to ensure he is placed ion a forward position early and hopefully in a winning position turning for home.
