LIGHTLY raced three-year-old Begabretro gets the chance to break his maiden status in Launceston tonight when he tackles the Examiner Newspaper 3YO and Up maiden Plate (race 2) over 1400 metres.
Begebretro (Delago Brom-Angelika) produced a Herculean effort last time out in Launceston when second to A Touch Of Shades in a maiden over 1400 metres.
The Gary White-trained gelding drew an outside gate and was forced to cover a lot of extra ground and was used up in order to get into a winning position.
He also hit a flat spot at the top of the straight but motored home to miss by a long neck.
“There were a few things that went wrong last start but he did a good job to finish as close as he did,” White said.
“The horse has definitely not gone backwards since that run so I am expecting him to run a big race tonight,” he said.
White also has Whoforgot Derboots engaged In the opening event and the trainer also expects him to make his presence felt.
“Clare Lindop rode him last start and confirmed my belief that the horse is now looking for more ground and he gets that tonight,” White said.
“He has drawn well and there looks to be some genuine speed in the race so it should be honestly run.”
“It’s quite a decent step up in distance from 1400m to 2100m but we are hoping he’s up to it,” he said.
Both horses will be ridden by Justin Hamer who has enjoyed a lot of success for the White stable of late.
