THE connections of Hobart Cup placegetter Davcon believe the gelding can atone in today’s AAMI Launceston Cup over 2400 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre.
Davcon was doing his best work at the end of the Hobart Cup when a close-up third to Bid Spotter and Organised and yesterday his trainer Heath Conners gave the gelding a glowing report on the eve of his next assignment.
Connections of Dream Pedlar also were upbeat about that horse’s chances of finally winning one of the state’s only two Group 3 events.
Dream Pedlar was given a decent hit-out at Longford on Monday and trainer Troy Blacker was upbeat about his chances.
Dream Pedlar was sent out the favourite in the AAMI Hobart Cup in which he was sent out favourite but had to settle for fifth.
“The horse hit a flat spot around the 600m and to be honest I thought he’d run closer to last but he picked up again and ran on strong at the finish so we are hoping the 2400 metres will be more to his liking,” Blacker said.
Another interstate invader expected to be a contender is the Darren Weir-trained Streaky Fella that arrived in the state in the early hours of Monday morning.
Streaky Fella has been heavily backed into $6.50 and looked in great shape when having a pick of grass at the Blacker stables at Longford where he is being accommodated during his Launceston stay.
Weir knows what it takes to win cups in Tasmania having snared three Hobart Cups with True Courser, Offenbach and Gotta Keep Cool in the apace of four years from 2006-2009.
Streaky Fella comes off a narrow but impressive win over 2400 metres at Morphetville in South Australia on February 12.
