MULTIPLE premiership-winning trainer Charlie Goggin knows what it takes to win a $300,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup and at Tattersall’s Park on Sunday he will take a two-pronged attack into the state’s richest race.
Goggin will saddle up Testasaurus and rank outsider Family Trust and while neither are as firm in the market as his two previous Hobart Cup winners Russian Rogue in 1992 and Brorama Star in 2001.
Testasaurus has been racing well and goes into Sunday’s race at his peak, although he will have to contend with a wide barrier (15).
“The wide gate won’t worry Testasaurus because he will get back so the barrier isn’t an issue,” Goggin said.
“The horse goes into the race in great shape and he drops six kilograms on what he carried when third in the Ingham Cup last week,” he said.
Family Trust scraped into the race as the second emergency owing to the connections of Victorian entry Shewan opting to bypass the race.
Family trust has performed well over the distance as a three-year-old but he has not progressed as both trainer and owners would have liked.
But he is by Carnegie and they usually don’t blossom until they are four or five.
Family Trust will be ridden by in-form Victorian apprentice Talia Rodder who will be fresh from riding a double at Launceston last Thursday night.
Testasaurus will be partnered by top South Australian jockey Clare Lindop who rode Testasaurus to victory twice in her home state when in the care of Leon McDonald.
