IN-FORM chaser I’m A Fencer is poised to notch the biggest win of his career at Devonport today.
All the Leigh Wood-trained dog has to do is mirror his effort to win his heat last week and the Group 3 Dowling McCarthy Hankook Tyres Devonport Cup over 452 metres is his for the taking.
I’m A Fencer (Go Wild Teddy-Wooreddy) has won at his past five outings and in his heat last week he stopped the clock at 25.43s which was one of the best times recorded on the track in the past year.
From box seven the son of Go Wild Teddy would have an unimpeded run to the top turn as Accounts in box eight is a known average beginner.
I’m A Fencer’s kennel mate Cracker Boy also clocked a slick time of 25.59 in winning his heat from box three, so he warrants respect along withy Accounts who mirrored Cracker Boy’s Time.
The Debbie Cannan-trained StPierre made the most of an inside draw (1) to win his heat in a time of 25.54s which was a personal best for the son of Surf Lorian while Classic Citi (1) and Perfect Sox (2) had an identical heat-winning time of 25.88s.
Mushy Peas won his heat in a time of 25.77s and would probably need to find a couple of lengths to be competitive in the final, especially from his awkward draw (box 6).
The Mick Stringer-trained Banger Harvey impressed in wining his heat at his first look at the track in a time of 25.73 so there should be a bit of improvement in him at his second outing on the Devonport showground circuit.
The Devonport Cup is race six on the 10-event card and is scheduled to start at 2.09pm
