The debate centres on whether you are best served going wide with your selections in the hope of finding a roughie that will undoubtedly increase the result of the dividend, or focusing your investment on one or two runners that on the form have the better chance of figuring in the finish which will require a smaller investment.

A popular form of investment is percentage betting, for example, giving you the opportunity to cover a standard $24 Box first four for a cost of $12 for a 50% share of the declared dividend, likewise a $6 investment would give you a 25% return of the first four dividends.

If you decide to go down the path of adding more runners to your selections you could take five runners (cover 120 first four combinations) for a $12 investment and be in line for a 10% share of the declared dividend, it will increase your winning chances but decrease your share of the dividend.

If you think it’s better to concentrate on a stand-out selection (top pick) or even two runners in the field then let’s look at tonight’s meeting.

First point to consider is don’t get set in a routine bet just because that’s what you are used to doing in the past, why have a box first four just because it’s easy to say or type into your account, if you think there are only two winning chances in a race why add two other runners just to say it’s a box first four.

So with that in mind let’s have a look at tonight’s card of chasing in Launceston, in race three South Serpent look hard to beat from the box two draws over the 600-metre trip while Lenard’s Boy has been a model of consistency and has drawn the red box.

If we were to take number 2 to win, 1 for second, 4-8 for third and 3-4-5-6-8 for fourth it will cost $8 for 100% of dividend, (2/1/4-8/3-4-5-6-8).

Sacred Way has drawn the red in race six over 515 metres, she looks a classic example of a stand-out selection for the first four, 1/2-3-5-8/2-3-5-8/2-3-5-8 for a cost of $8 (33% of dividend).

Buckle Up Axon (pictured), drawn in box one is another chaser which falls into the category in race seven the third leg of the quadrella,  first four suggestion 1/4-5-7/4-5-7/2-4-5-7-8, cost of $8 (44% of dividend).

Our final race to focus on is race eight, Kayda Affair has recorded the fastest time of 30.13 seconds among his rivals and will find tonight’s grade 5 company much easier than his last start solid fourth to Be Like Bill in FFA company in Hobart on Thursday night, but there is a number of dangers so we will take 1-5-8/1-5-8/ 1-3-5-8/ 1-2-3-5-8 – cost $8 (33% of dividend).
