IF there were more short sprint races on the Tassie calendar there’s no doubt Mambo Light would be a star.

At Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night Mambo Light performed another demolition job on her rivals in the Right Price Meats grade four over 340 metres.

With a wing on every paw she flew the lids and scorched to the front and held sway over handy opposition to score from Proven Shiraz and Shazbec with the favourite Kialdu Eddy a close-up fourth.

Mambo Light has won four of her nine starts in Tasmania and three have been over the short courses with the other coming at Devonport over 452 metres.

She began her career in Victoria and a debut win over 347 metres at Geelong was an indication of things to come.

Mambo Light (Pure Octane-Phiona) begins like a bullet and while she has a good midrace cruising speed her closing stages have been modest, which is why trainer Susan Gittus has been targeting the shorter trips.

Mambo Light’s win was the first leg of a winning double for Gittus who also prepared Droopy’s State to win a grade four over 461 metres.

Droopy’s State began well from box eight and eventually forged to the front and then held on for a game win in a strong grade four over 461 metres.

The former Victorian was feeling the pinch on the line but still had enough in reserve to hold out Sheer Octane and Proven Octane.

Droopy’s State began his career in Victoria in May with a debut win at Warragul over 460 metres but five subsequent failures on city and provincial tracks led to the son of Droopy’s Maldini-State Of Volente being shipped to Tasmania, much to the delight of Gittus.

Droopy’s State has won three of his only four starts in Tasmania and probably should be unbeaten.

He suffered bad interference at his only attempt at Devonport where he was squeezed up from box five at his second start in the state.
