Over Speeding scorched the Mowbray circuit clocking 29.69 in a strong grade three event to defeat Roc A Doodle and recent Hobart Thousand heat placegetter Pure Thirst.
The Graeme Moate-trained dog had only won two races in Tasmania from 21 starts prior to this most recent win.
“While this is only his third win since he’s been with me, he has notched nine minor placings so he’s been consistent without winning a lot,” Moate said.
“Alisdair Armstrong bred him and sent him to me in June and from the outset I thought he’d win a few.”
“This dog had raced in Victoria and his litter sister Dancing Lights won a few good races on country tracks so there’s definitely time for him to win a good one,” he said.
Dancing Lights won 24 from 41 for almost $55,000 that included only one win in the city at Sandown in June last year.
Moate had an idea of what he might be getting in Over Speeding because he trained his mother Special Intent.
“Special Intent was a good race bitch that won her share of races for me here in Tassie so this dog is from a good line,” he said.
Over Speeding is a mad railer but because he is not the swiftest out of the boxes he has yet to salute carrying the red vest.
“He’s won three races and all have been from box three so I guess that’s his pet box.”
“This latest win was definitely his best because he mustered speed quickly and he was very strong over the final 100 metres”.”
Over Speeding won by over eight lengths and his was the best time of the night.
Moate said he always thought Over Speeding would make a decent middle distance dog but he has failed every time over journeys around 600m.
“I was reasonably confident he would be better at middle distances but he has told us otherwise and if he holds this form then he should be winning more often,” he said.
Moate has eight dogs in work including a couple of unraced pups that might make the grade.
“I’ve got two 20-month-old dogs by Zambora Assassin that are coming along nicely.”
“They are out of Glamour Gal that I trained here in Tassie and from what they’ve show me so far I’d reckon they’ll win their juveniles no problem.”
The pups are owned by their breeder John Tsapos from Victoria, who has had a long association with Moate’s kennel.
One of the pups, Glamour Gun, will make his debut in Hobart on New Year Eve.
“We are hoping to bring in the New Year with a winner,” Moate said.
