In Brief

  • Lightly raced but ultra consistent.
  • Wells confident Gee Gee True Story is up to task in Launceston tonight.
  • Apprentice claim will help talented four-year-old.

Trainer Leon Wells expects his lightly raced four-year-old Gee Gee True Story to make an impact in a benchmark 74 handicap over 1100 metres in Launceston tonight, race six on the card.

Gee Gee True Story has proven to be one of the stable’s most consistent gallopers, having started only five times for three wins and a minor placing.

Tonight he steps up in grade and while it is clearly his biggest test, the gelding takes winning form into the race and will carry only 53.5 kg courtesy of apprentice Scarlet So’s three-kilogram claim.

“This horse has had only a handful of starts for thee wins so he obviously has ability but I’m pretty sure it’s untapped ability,” Wells said.

“I couldn’t fault his last start effort and when they win it’s hard to put a knock on them.

“Whether he is the real deal might not be shown until next prep because we are definitely going to get a better idea from what he shows us this time around.

“He still does a couple of things wrong in his races but overall we couldn’t be more pleased with how he is progressing.”

Gee Gee True Story has drawn barrier one, which should allow him to find a spot handy to the lead in the first 200 metres.

“He has good early speed so barrier one will be an advantage but there’s plenty of other speed in the race and that’s going to suit my horse even more.”
