WELL bred filly Magnetosphere signaled her arrival as one of the state’s most promising three-year-olds by scoring an impressive win in the Jackson Motor Company 3YO Cup over 1200 metres in Launceston on Thursday night.
Magnetosphere was resuming from a lengthy spell but she was presented ready to run by trainer Barry Campbell who hailed her a potential Oaks contender after the win.
With Craig Newitt in the saddle, the filly settled worse than midfield and was still spotting the leaders 10 lengths turning for home.
But when Newitt called on the daughter of Al Samer-Magnetic Force to extend in the home straight she responded magnificently and grabbed victory in the shadows of the post.
Magnetosphere hit the line a half-neck ahead of Socks with Second Dozen a half-head away third and just in advance of Rutherglen Rhul and race leader Punctuate.
The last time Newitt partnered a horse trained by Campbell they won the 2003 Devonport Cup.
“It’s been a long time between drinks with me and Barry (Campbell) but better late than never,” Newitt said when asked why it had been so long since he’d ridden one for Campbell.
Newitt said the filly had a bright future.
“She’s certainly above average. She let go like a pretty smart filly tonight,” Newitt said.
“Barry’s only concern before the race was that she might be a shade underdone so I rode her quietly back in the field where she was comfortable.”
“I was happy where we were in the run and I managed to get onto the back of the right horses when we were making our move,” he said.
Magnetosphere is owned and raced by Barry and Enid Larter who bred her with the hope of producing a potential Oaks filly, so it looks as though their plan may be realised.
