In Brief

  • Hillier modest with plans for Bring The Flave.
  • Mister Gently well driven to score.
  • Mark Yole has a night out in the sulky.

Beauty Point trainer-driver Rohan Hillier continued his good run of feature race success this season when three-year-old gelding Bring The Flave won last night’s 7AD Allen Williams Memorial Final at the Devonport Showgrounds, just five days ago Hillier claimed the Listed Tassie Golden Apple in Launceston.

From barrier two on the second-row Hillier positioned the $3.20 favourite one-out and two-back before racing three-wide for the final 1000-metres of the race.

Bring The Flave was too good for his rivals late to defeat Karalta News by 5.7 metres with He Got Rocked a further 6.2 metres away third in a mile rate of 2m 3.6s.

The gelded son of Heston Blue Chip was purchased by his connections as a weanling and was unplaced in two starts last season.

“He had a couple of runs as a two-year-old and he was disappointing for what he was showing,” said trainer-driver Rohan Hillier after the win.

“We tipped him out and had this race in mind for six-months,” added Hillier.

Hiller was very modest when describing the plans for the pacer.

“We will just try and find an easy one,” he said.

Bring The Flave will contest Sunday’s Cressy Transport Tasmanian Country Championship for three-year-olds at Carrick.

Another Devonport winner that will be backing up at Carrick on Sunday is the Craig Hayes trained and driven Mister Gently.

Mister Gently winning in Devonport last night.

Mister Gently won a heat of the Carrick Trainers Encouragement Series when first-up from a spell on 1 December with the final of that race to be staged on Sunday.

While Hayes waits for the final the gelded son of Live Or Die has found the winners circle on two occasions including the Kevin Redpath North West Plate Final last night.

Hayes drove a brilliant race early to find the spot outside the leader after the first half a lap from barrier three on the second row in the 2286 metre standing start event.

“That was the plan to angle up the track and follow Todd (Rattray) horse out as he was the quickest beginner and that worked well, it took me a little while to find the death,” said Hayes after the race.

“I could do what I liked from there on,” he added.

Mister Gently was sent out the $2.10 favourite and was able to hold off a late charge from War Dan Star who ran the winner down to a half head, the early leader Island Bliss 3.2 metres away third.

An issue with the lights in the home straight caused a 90-minute delay to the final two races of the night.

Trainer Ben Yole and his stable driver Mark Yole were happy to wait with the duo winning four races on the program including the final two races.

Their quartet of winners included Just Say Go, Southern Gnp, Gentleman Red and Chilla Breeze.

North-west coast trainers also had a good night with the Rodney Burgess trained Prettyindisguise proving too good in race one while the Geoff Smith trained Rollon Jack was successful with Conor Crook in the sulky, the concession reinsman was celebrating his 24th birthday.
