Over the past month, Peter Staples has caught up with several of the state’s leading trainers who have key chances across the Ladbrokes Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

Wednesday’s Ladbrokes Devonport Cup will see a field of 11 face the judge including two up and coming four-year-old geldings, Newhart and Gee Gee Fiorente. Both horses have had the Devonport Cup on the radar for some time and come into the race with strong performances at the track last start. Hear from Leanne Gaffney and Leon Wells about their respective preparations leading into Wednesday’s race.

Leanne Gaffney – Newhart

A fast finishing second in the Sheffield Cup established Newhart as a leading contender for the Devonport Cup, and he has been kept safe by bookmakers in early markets.

Leon Wells – Gee Gee Fiorente

After missing the Sheffield Cup, he put his Cup preparation back on track with a strong win in benchmark 66 company, and will plummet in weight from that run.
