KEN ANDERSON celebrated his first win as an owner in almost 27 years when his well-bred three-year-old Makes centres scored a convincing win in the 3YO & Up Maiden over 1100 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday.
Anderson enjoyed much success as an owner in the 1980s but putting children through private school and other compounding expenses took its toll on his superfluous spending.
But with the children well and truly off his hands and in the workforce he has taken the plunge back into the game that holds a special place in his heart.
Anderson races Makes Cents in partnership with Steve Crane, Dr Graeme McLeod, who bred the horse, the gelding’s trainer Charlie Goggin and his brother Billy Goggin.
Makes Cents (Dash For Cash-Just A Little Bit x Snippets) had notched four minor placings from eight previous starts but a change in riding tactics proved to be the turning point for the gelding.
Jockey Stephen Maskiell had makes Cents settled worse than midfield while Wills Hope set a cracking pace in front.
Wills Hope kicked clear at the top of the home straight and was being hailed the winner 250m out but when Maskiell called on his charge to extend Makes Cents knuckled down to his task and went on to defeat score by almost a length from Wills Hope with Arnika a similar margin away third and just in advance of the fast-finishing Striking Copper.
