The Devonport Harness Racing club stages a handy seven-race card tonight at the Devonport Showgrounds.
The highest prize money race on the card is the last race of the night, the $8,100 John McKenna Race Night Vet Pace for the two-year-old’s which has only attracted a field of four starters and punters have it as a race in two.
Agouda Ruler is the $1.65 favourite in the race, the John Castles trained youngster has won his past two outings and has the services of Gareth Rattray.
Agouda Rulers most recent win was on the Devonport track on 28 February where he was too good for his rivals that included one of his challengers tonight in the third placegetter Incognito.
Rattray has driven 35 winners in the state this season in what is a competitive state drivers title this season with Mark Yole and Ricky Duggan in equal second spot on 34 and Rohan Hillier fourth on 32.
Our Idea Fella appears to be the value of the race at $2.10.
The Taylor Ford-trained pacer caught the eye in Launceston when flashing home for second in the $15,000 Debutante Stakes in Launceston on 17 January.
Since that effort, the gelding has had two trials including a win in Hobart on 9 March where he scored a 40-metre win in 2m 4.9s with a last half mile of 60.3s.
One of the better bets on the card appears to be Laid Back Kenny in race six, the CUB Pace.
Trainer Geoff Smith gave the gelded son of Mister Big a strong push when speaking on Tasracing’s From The Stables Podcast.
“I don’t know what’s happened to the horse, he’s just improved out of sight … and I reckon he will be knocking on the door going home,” said Smith.
“He is one of the best horses I have got in the stable at the moment and is one of the quickest going round my track,” added the trainer.
The time for the first race was changed on Thursday and was brought forward to commence at 17:49 with the last race set down for 20.45.
All races will be shown on Sky Racing 1 and TasracingTV.
