In Brief

  • Tasmanian Government's decision to close border leaves Trinder with no option.
  • Mystic Journey travelled well to Melbourne and is ready to fire in William Reid.
  • William Reid likely to be a hit-and-run mission for Trinder's stable star.

Star Tasmanian mare Mystic Journey will be without her trainer Adam Trinder when she steps out for her first assignment this preparation in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Trinder travelled to Melbourne with the mare on the Spirit of Tasmania on Wednesday night and not long after arriving in Melbourne this morning the trainer was advised the Tasmanian Government had issued a closure of the Tasmanian border effective from midnight Friday.

The State Government declared a State of Emergency yesterday morning over the spread of the corona virus (COVID-19) with non-essential travellers coming into the state after midnight Friday having to place themselves in isolation for 14 days.

“I must admit it was a shock when I was told this morning about the closure of our border but it is what it is and I guess we have to continue to do whatever is necessary to restrict this corona virus from spreading,” Trinder said.

“The mare travelled extremely well and has settled in well at Tony McEvoy’s stables, which is her normal routine when she travels to Melbourne to race.

“I can rely on Tony McEvoy’s stable to attend to Mystic Journey’s preparation for her race in the final hours leading up to the race but I will be on a flight back to Tasmania at 4pm and I will have to watch the race on TV like the rest of Tasmania.”

Trinder said Mystic Journey would return to Tasmania by sea on Saturday night.
