TRAINER Charlie Goggin had high expectations of well-bred gelding Old Hands when he first embarked on his racing career but along the way those expectations were extinguished by some sub-standard performances.
But for a horse that hasn’t lived up to expectations he has still paid his way, especially in the past fortnight.
Old Hands scored an impressive win in Launceston under lights last Thursday week and at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday he repeated the dose in an open handicap over 1400 metres.
With Victorian apprentice Chris Pace aboard, Old Hands was given the run of the race behind the leader and when eased three-wide turning for home he pounced on the leaders, Pure Essence and Heartbreak Kid, and went on to defeat that pair comfortably.
It took the well-bred six-year-old gelding’s career earnings to beyond $120,000 earned from eight wins and 23 minor placings from 67 starts.
Old Hands is owned by the trainer’s daughters Emma Goggin and Luella Meaburn.
