Two black-type winners to come out of the north-west coast were Grand Tycoon and Rebel Bride. Both were prolific winners though neither had exceptionally long careers with 18 and 32 starts respectively.

Grand Tycoon

Grand Tycoon strolls in to win the Alfa bowl over 1100 metres in Launceston.

  • Bay or Brown Gelding
  • 18 starts
  • 11 wins
  • 4 minor placings
  • $313,050 prizemoney
  • First start: November 2012
  • Trainer: Barry Campbell

The gelding was the dominant two-year-old of the 2012-13 season, winning his first seven races including the Listed Elwick Stakes and Gold Sovereign double. The wins weren’t as frequent as he progressed to take on the older horses but he did run Hellova Street to within a length in the Tattsbet Stakes back in 2015, and finished his career only missing a place three times in his 18 starts.

Rebel Bride

Rebel Bride holds out Geegees Blackflash to win theĀ  Goodwood Handicap.

  • Brown Mare
  • 32 starts
  • 14 wins
  • 13 minor placings
  • $560,950 prizemoney
  • First start: February 2011
  • Trainer: Leon Wells

One of the best Tasmanian mares of her time she proved this by winning three times at Group 3 level including the Bow Mistress twice at 1200m and the Vamos over 1400m. Her best results came against her own sex but she did win the 2013 Tattsbet Stakes and finished second in the Conquering the year before when taking on the males. She was adaptable, not missing a place in eight runs on her home track and the entirety of her career prizemoney came from racing solely in Tasmania.
