These two budding superstars have the potential to add several Tasmanian feature races in coming years to their already impressive resumes following brilliant juvenile seasons. They’ve beaten each other on the racetrack and one of them will surely be crowned Tasmania’s three year old of the year at the annual awards night.

Deroche

Deroche (Jason Maskiell) easily wins the 2yo Magic Millions Classic in Launceston.

  • Chestnut Filly
  • 13 starts
  • 9 wins
  • 3 minor placings
  • $388,139 prizemoney
  • First start: January 2019
  • Trainer: Leanne Gaffney

Deroche won her first trial as a 2YO by 10 lengths and ever since has rarely been missed by punters, her longest starting price in 13 career runs is $3.30 and she has started odds on 11 times. Mystical Pursuit had her measure in her debut season but she really stamped her authority as a 3YO winning five of her seven starts, rounding out her campaign with a win in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes when taking on the older horses. She has the ability to race forward or with a sit and is an incredibly exciting prospect for Tasmanian racing over the next few years.

Still A Star

Still A Star (Brendon McCoull) wins the Tasmanian Oaks in Launceston.

  • Chestnut Filly
  • 12 starts
  • 7 wins
  • 5 minor placings
  • $411,190 prizemoney
  • First start: April 2019
  • Trainer: Bill Ryan

A frustrating 2YO campaign which saw the filly run second at her first four starts before winning her maiden is now a distant memory for Still A Star who won six races as a 3YO. She was $4.80 into $2.40 winning first-up over 1100m and ultimately she would only be better as the distances increased, winning the Tasmanian Guineas against the boys at 1600m before adding the Launceston Guineas, Strutt Stakes and Tasmanian Oaks all over 2100m and all at Listed level. She hasn’t missed the quinella in all 12 of her starts and has taken connections on a magnificent ride which only looks set to continue.
