Who doesn’t love a grey horse? This pair were terrific money earners for connections and one in particular lived up to the saying “always back a grey in the wet”.
Jakcorijim
- Grey Gelding
- 65 starts
- 13 wins
- 25 minor placings
- $265,390 prizemoney
- First start: March 2010
- Trainer: Glenn Stevenson
The veteran of 65 starts didn’t know how to run a bad race, finishing in the top three far more often that not throughout his career. Like many Devonport horses he loved racing on his home track, 7 of his 13 overall wins came on the synthetic. While he has an open handicap winner on several occasions he couldn’t quite breakthrough for a feature win, placing in the Devonport Cup on a couple of occasions as well as running second in both the George Adams and Thomas Lyons at Listed level.
Spy Wears Prado
- Grey Gelding
- 47 starts
- 11 wins
- 15 minor placings
- $143,395 prizemoney
- First start: May 2011
- Trainer: Dianne Ray-Luttrell
An out and out wet tracker, the gelding was almost an auto bet for punters when he struck rain affected ground. All 11 of his career wins came on either soft or heavy going and eight of those in Hobart. He was taken across the water to contest a greys only race at Caulfield in 2014 but unfortunately conditions didn’t suit and he finished just worse than midfield. He had some quality scalps among the beaten brigade in open handicaps and finished off his career with a win in his last ever race in 2015.
